Property Information

Workington is a port and town in Cumbria noted for its production of iron ore, steel and coal. Mary Queen of Scots fled to England and landed in the vicinity of Workington after crossing the Solway Firth. She spent the night in Workington Hall but was moved to Carlisle Castle.

Workington’s economy started with the iron ore field to the south of town. This was found to produce high-grade phosphorus free haematite. The first quarter of a century of steel making need phosphorus free haematite this and the local coalfield enabled Workington to become world-class steel producers. The Moss Bay steel works were improved in the early 1980’s but were closed by the government in 1982.

Workington made steel railway rails and these were exported all over the world. This production plant closed in 2006 ending Workington’s association with steel works.

Industries in the town today include chemicals, cardboard, waste management plus a new industry that recycle old computers that are exported to needy countries. The docks are still used though their future is unsure. Also in the town is the British Cattle Movement Services, a government agency to oversee the UK beef and dairy industry.

Many of the town’s work force are employed at the nuclear plant in Sellafield. Eddy Stobbart Road Haulage also has a depot in Lilleyhall.

Property for rent is readily available in Workington at average costs of £625pcm for a 2 bed flat, £495pcm for a 2 bed house, £500pcm for a 3 bed house and £450pcm for a 4 bed house.

Access is via the A596 from Maryport for the A595 and A66 from Cockermouth and the M6 motorway. The recent regeneration the town has seen demolished the Co-op and Tesco outlets and a new shopping centre, Washington Square, was built on the site along with a car park. Shops trading in the centre include Debenham, HMV, River Island and Next.

A new Tesco Extra is also planned for the Cloffocks site, an important recreational area that has caused plenty of controversy.
