Wolverhampton is a town that lies in the West Midlands. It has, in the town, a statue of Prince Albert. The statue was unveiled by Queen Victoria on her first public engagement since the death of her husband. She was so pleased with the statue she knighted the town’s Mayor.

It was the first town in England to have automatic traffic lights in Princes Street, to commemorate this these still have the black and white striped posts. The town has a relatively older population with there being more 60yrs and over than 15yrs and younger. There is also a large Asian population.

Wolverhampton was once known as an engineering and manufacturing town but today around 80% of business is in the Services sector. The largest employer is Wolverhampton County Council with 12,000 members of staff. Also Birmingham Midshires, Portman Building Society and the University of Wolverhampton are all large employers.

The town is near the M6, M5 M6 toll and M64 plus regular rail services run to Birmingham and Manchester. The Birmingham Main Line Canal, Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, Shropshire Union Canal and Wryley Canal all run through the town.

For musical entertainment the football ground is often used, indoor performances are held in the Wolverhampton Civic Hall that can hold 3,000 standing. There are several other music venues around the town.

Several famous names from the music world came from Wolverhampton, Slade and Beverly Knight to name just two. Jamelia lives in the town with her mother and daughter.

There are several cinemas in town, an art gallery and a craft gallery plus theatres. Sport is catered for in the way of clubs for football, speedway, cycling and athletics, with both Tessa Sanderson and Denise Lewis having been raised in the town. There is a greyhound track at West Park and Wolverhampton Racecourse is just north of the city. It was one of the first to have an all weather course and is Britain’s only floodlit racetrack.

Shopping is good in Wolverhamtpon and some to be found include Bon Marche, Coconut, River Island, Size Wize, Hannah Bartram, CC.
