Wembley is known the world over as being the home of Wembley Stadium, originally known as the Empire Stadium, and to England’s National Football team.
It was first built at a cost of £750,000 and opened to house the British Empire Exhibition in 1924-5.
Next to the Stadium are the Wembley Arena and Conference Centre. The Arena for thirty-nine years held the Professional World Singles Tennis Tournaments and the Conference Centre held the Masters Snooker Tournament which now is to take place in the Wembley Arena.
The original stadium was demolished in 2002 and reopened in 2007 at a cost of £727million.
It has the second largest capacity in Europe and incorporates a Platform System to make it usable for athletics although this reduces the seating capacity to 60,000. There was in the old stadium 39 steps to climb to receive a trophy now there are 107.
The two giant screens in the stadium are both the equivalant of 600 domestic television sets.
The first match at the new ground was held on 19th May 2007 and was the FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Manchester United – Chelsea being the winners after the match going to extra time.
The first music concert will be given by George Michael on the 9th and 10th June 2007.
There is an abundance of properties to let in and around Wembley and the average prices of these are: Studio flat £650pm, l bed flat £830pm, 2 bed flat £1025pm and a 3 bed house £1365pm.
The shopping parade runs along the High Road, and as well as smaller shops Woolworths, Primark and Blands of Wembley all have department stores there.
Wembley can be reached easily, Wembley Central and North Wembley are on Silverlink and Bakerloo Underground line, Wembley Stadium served by Chiltern railways, and Wembley Park is on the Metropolitan and Jubilee Underground lines.
