Warrington is a large town in Cheshire. It is on the River Mersey near the Manchester Ship Canal and close to the M6, M56 and M62 motorways.
Warrington has been a major crossing on the River Mersey for hundreds of years.
The dents in the church walls are said to have been made by cannon fire during the Civil War.
Until the 1970’s Warrington was well known for being the centre of steel, textiles, brewing, tanning and also chemical industries. The heavy industry declined between the 1970’s and 1980’s but the town is now known for light industry, distribution and technology.
It was in March 1993 that two IRA bombs exploded in Warrington and two children were killed. One of their fathers founded the Peace Centre in a campaign to bring together conflicting communities. It opened on the 7th Anniversary of the bombings.
During World War II Burton wood RAF Base was home to the largest US Air Force Base outside the United States. The camp was visited by Humphrey Bogart and Bob Hope who arrived to entertain the G.I. Troops.
Warrington has shopping areas at the Gold Square and the Cockhedge Textile Mill was demolished and another shopping centre built on the site. There are also four shopping streets in the town centre. There is an indoor market and several small shopping malls in town.
Some of the shops to be found in Warrington include Debenhams, Growing Trends, Pip Squeak and Wilfred, Just Kids, Must Haves, Miss Selfridge, H & M Hennes, Man to Man, Duffer Menswear and Turnstyle.
Ikea built their first UK store in Warrington and is next to Gemini, a large retail park that includes Marks and Spencer, Next and Toys “R” Us.
Warrington has a museum, art gallery, cinema and several parks and nature reserves. Also in the area is a ten pin bowing alley, and indoor paintball and an indoor karting centre.

The Barley Mow is the oldest pub in Warrington and dates back to 1561.

Just off the M62 close to town is the Gullivers Theme Park. This is a children’s theme park with areas including Circus World, Western World, Prehistoric Lost World, Counts Castle, and Smugglers Wharf, Water World and Adventure World most of these areas have children’s play areas to keep even the youngest member of the family amused.
