The earliest signs of occupation in Sunbury were funeral urns found from the Bronze Age, these dated back to the 10th century BC. Sunbury was also mentioned in a 962 Charter.
In 1889 a group of music hall entertainers met at the Magpie public house, in Lower Sunbury, which is still in existence today, and they formed, the now very famous, Grand Order of Water Rats.
Sunbury is divided in two parts, Lower Sunbury, the more rural, is on the banks of the River Thames and Sunbury town that is more built up. This area is home to big name companies including Chubb and BP has a large number of business units on Sunbury Business Park. This land used to belong to the Cadbury family. Also in this part of Sunbury are several small retail units plus a large Tesco Superstore.
The Queen Mary Reservoir, built in 1925, is home to a sailing club and is used by schools and clubs for water sport training.
Just round the corner is Kempton Park Racecourse, a very popular venue holding several meetings a year but can cause a lot of traffic and parking problems.
Sunbury is on the A316 at the beginning of the M3 motorway. There are also two railway stations serving the area Sunbury and Kempton Park Stations.

In Nursery Road there is the Hazelwood Golf Club and the Sunbury Leisure Centre.
There is a large Nursery selling garden furniture, plants and conservatories. It is also home to smaller retail units including a café, a garden pond and fish retailer, a craft shop, wool and art store and a greengrocer selling a comprehensive selection of locally grown fruit and vegetables plus homemade jams, pickles and relishes.
