Southport is a seaside town on the Irish Sea coast. It is known as a quieter and more refined resort than neighbouring Blackpool.

The town attracts wealthy families to the area and also because of the large expensive housing around Southport several footballers from local teams reside in the town.

Tourism is a large part of the towns economy but there is plenty to do in and around the town.

For the children there are long sandy beaches, a model railway village. An indoor water park – Splash World – with a 25metre pool and a learner’s pool together with slides and high rides, fast rides or just lazy river. It a great place for all the family.

The Pleasureland funfair closed in 2006 but a replacement funfair opened in July 2007 known temporarily as the ‘New Pleasureland’.

The town has several air shows each year and a Jazz Festival, also a classical music concert which ends with a big firework display.

The town is particularly known for its golf courses, its hosted two Ryder Cups and is one of the venues for the Open Championships.

The Marine Way Bridge opened in 2004 is an important link from town to beach.

Ainsdale Beach is popular for kite sports especially kite surfing.

The Marine Lake is used for water skiing, rowing, and sailing.

Southport has a very active scouting organisation and has currently around 700 members of all ages. They take part in the carnival and now hold a bi-annual, very successful scout and guide Gang show. The scouts also use Waterside for canoeing, kayaking, sailing and dragon boating.

Southport is very good for shopping with several shopping area around the town. Princes Street is the busiest street in town with a variety of shops. Warren Street has shops, supermarkets and restaurants. There is a large market with some 200 stalls. Under Market Place is Underbanks that is a maze of twisting side streets selling gifts, handmade jewellery and musical instruments also has street cafes for welcome breaks. The Peel Centre retail park has all the usual superstores. The Courts is the former Magistrates court and the Southport’s newest retail complex with Caffe Nero, MK One, and T K Maxx to name but a few retail stores.
