Sheffield is well known for its steel. Although much of this industry has declined the city still produces cutlery and tools. In 1296 there was an established market now known as Castle Square and from then on grew into a Market Town.

The 14th century saw the city as knife makers. In 1740 Crucible steel was produced giving a much better quality of steel than previously used and around this time silver plate was invented. The recession hit Sheffield hard in the 1930’s and during WWII the factories were used to make ammunition for the war.

It is in the 1950’s and 60’s that most of the slums were demolished and new roads built. Sheffield is a University city with many students staying on to work and live in the city after finishing university. There is of course a very good nightlife in Sheffield with several pubs, bars and nightclubs such as Gatecrasher One and University of Sheffield Student Union. There is a wide variety of food available from small cafes to upmarket restaurants.

Sheffield has been reported to be the fastest growing city in Yorkshire. The city is home to a number of attractive galleries such as the Millenium Galleries where displays of contemporary art, craft and design can be seen together with displays of Sheffield steel and metalwork. Several Museums are in the city including a bus transport museum and another for the railways.

Trains from Sheffield run to St Pancras taking two and half hours via Derby or Nottingham, Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Airport and Yorkshire. Places of interest in Sheffield are plentiful and include Winter Gardens with its glass roof, wood clad arches and exotic plants. Nest to this modern building is the Victorian Town Hall.

The Peace Gardens with sculptures, fountains and large lawns which on sunny days are packed with workers enjoying an al fresco lunch. The cathedral situated on Church Street and has beautiful old and modern stained glass windows. Or go back in time to when metal work was a cottage industry at the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet that lies four miles southwest of the city on the A621, and see restored houses and machines taking you back to that time.

Sport is important in Sheffield and the Crucible Venue holds the World Championships of snooker and squash. Sports clubs in the area cater for ice skating, dry skiing and there are two indoor climbing centres as well as football and rugby clubs.

Sheffield has made a bid to host either the 2014 or 2018 Commonwealth Games. Shopping is very good in Sheffield with Meadowhall Shopping Centre being one of Europe’s largest shopping centres housing 270 shops from High Street stores to Designer Boutiques. Forgate is a pedestrianised fashion area with street entertainers and specialist markets. Orchard Square has craft workshops.
