Ramsey is a small historical market-town located in the district of Huntingdonshire and the county of Cambridgeshire.
An island before the Fens were drained, Ramsey’s main high street is the Great Whyte which extends down to The Mere and once supplied the town with eels, fish and fowl and a means of transport.
Ramsey was built up around the gate of Ramsey Abbey, where the all powerful Abbots once ruled the town. The residents of Ramsey accused the Abbots of taking a large amount of the Hugh le Despenser Treasury. The Abbots appealed to the Bishop of Ely for support against the charges, which could explain the towns’ omission from the Doomsday Book.
Today, Ramsey is a thriving town offering good schools - Ailwyn Community School, for students in years 7-9, and Ramsey Abbey School, for students in years 10 and 11 and a growing business community.
The town also has plenty of leisure activities on offer, including the Huntingdon Tennis centre, Little Dragons Kung Fu club and the golf and bowling club.
Check out the Ramsey Rural museum to step back in time and find out how life was lived in this small fenland community.
