Oxford dates back to Saxon times and began with the St. Frideswides nunnery in the 8th century. In the 10th century Oxford was a military town and was raided on occasions by the Danes.
Oxford is known all over the world for its University and the University of Oxford was mentioned in records dating as far back as the 12th century. It is the oldest university in the English-speaking world.
Christchurch Cathedral is most unusual as it is not only a college chapel and cathedral but also is the cathedral of the Diocese of Oxford.
In 1790 Oxford Canal connected Oxford to Coventry, in 1796 the Oxford Canal Company built their own link to the Thames at Isis Lock. It was in the 1840’s that the railway was built here and linked Oxford to London.
Early in the 1900’s Oxford began to expand, printing was establishing itself in the town and at nearby Cowley the Morris Motor Company opened. 20,000 were working in the factory by 1970. A large part of this factory was demolished in 1990’s and is now the site of a major Business Park.
The Iffley Road running track, in Oxford, is where a 25 year old medical student, Roger Bannister, ran his famous ‘4 minute mile’,
Oxford has frequent rail services to Paddington, Bournemouth, Birmingham and Coventry.

Here the water is shallow and the area has several public houses along the river bank, including The Trout Inn at Wolvercote, where some of the scenes from ITV’s Inspector Morse were filmed.
A covered market with permanent stalls and shops that include greengrocers, bakeries and a gift shop is situated north of the High Street.
There are several shopping streets and centres with stores such as Bhs, Peacocks, Next, Primark, TK Maxx, Marks and Spencer, Matalan and Woolworths all trading there.
The City also has several theatres and cinemas.
