Nottingham is known for the legend of Robin Hood whose statue is a short distance from Old Market Square. No one is quite sure how true the stories are about Robin Hood. He’s Supposed to have lived in Sherwood Forest but some say he lived in York. His enemy was the Sheriff of Nottingham and today there is still a Sheriff of Nottingham but they have no jurisdiction.

Nottingham Castle was founded by William the Conqueror but other than the restored gatehouse only ruins of the medieval castle remain.

John Boot founded Boots the Chemist in 1849 and this was greatly developed later by his son.

During the 19th century the lace making industry was well established and the Museum of Costume and Textiles explains the role of Nottingham as the leading centre of embroider, lace making, tapestries and knitted textiles.

The Brewhouse Yard Museum is housed in five 17th century cottages carved from the cliff just below the castle. It shows life in Nottingham over the last 300 years and has really good reconstructions of traditional shops.

Some of the large employers in Nottingham include Experian, Powergen, Siemens and Speedo not forgetting Boots the Chemist who still have premises in the city.

The city has two theatres The Nottingham Playhouse and The Theatre Royal. The Annual Goose Fair is held in October and is a very popular event attracting large numbers of people. There are two main shopping centres in Nottingham. Victoria Centre and Broadmarsh. Department stores to be found here include John Lewis, House of Fraser, Debenhams and Marks and Spencer.

There are a great many nightclubs, music and comedy venue throughout the city. Nottingham has a wide selection of restaurants and these include Alley Café with funky DJ’s and serving vegan and vegetarian dishes. Skinny Sumo is a white tiles Japanese café/restaurant with a sushi bar conveyor belt. Nottingham is home to two famous football teams, Nottingham Forest and Notts County. Trent Bridge Cricket Ground is the home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. The National Ice Centre is where Olympic Dance Champions Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean trained. The Tennis Centre holds the Nottingham Open each year and is this is played in the weeks just before Wimbledon. There are also facilities for ice hockey and rugby and the National Watersports Centre has a regatta lake for rowing, canoeing and sailing.
