Middlesborough is a town on the south bank of the River Tees.
The town has been famous for its iron and steel production since the mid 1800’s. During the 19th century Teeside set the world price for iron and steel. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was designed and built by Dorman Long of Middlesborough and has MADE IN MIDDLEBOROUGH stamped on the side.
The Transporter bridge which spans the River Tee is one of the largest of its type in the world and was again made in Middlesborough. It was built in 1911, is still in daily use and is now a Grade II listed building.
Although the industries have declined there are still some chemical, fertiliser, iron and steel production around the area.
Another Grade II listed building is the town hall, built in 1883-1887 and is a beautiful Victorian building.
The Town has been modernised in recent years and has a 10meter high interactive tower made from metal and fibre optics. The ‘Spectra Txt’ allows the public to send text messages to change the colour of the lights.
The town is good for shopping with several shopping centres. One shop, Psyche in Captain Cook Square is well known and regularly gets occolades over some top London stores and it is rated the finest of its kind in the UK.
Other shops in the centres include Bliss, Kate Fearnley, Nicola Russel , Miss Selfridge, Benetton, West One Male Store, Aphrodite, Bertie Quality Clothing, Gravit and Angels.
A new art gallery opened in 2007, the Middlesborough Institute of Modern Art, houses the second largest collection of Picassos in the UK and hold works from Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse plus others.
Newham Grange Leisure Farm is in a southern district of town and has operated since 1866. It is now a tourist attraction with pigs , cattle and sheep it also displays exhibitions of farming history of the area.
Middlesborough has a vibrant night life especially during the universities term time when the town is alive with students in the bars and clubs. The town is very busy from Thursday nights to Sunday nights. A popular music venue is the Empire in the middle of the town. Club Bongo near the Railway Station is also popular as are the Crown, Cornerhouse and Barracuda.

A 120mtr tower is planned and will be the tallest building in the North East. Middlesborough is likely to be one of only a few towns to be granted a license to build a casino.
