Maidenhead was known as Maidens Hythe and became Maidenhythe in 1280. A bridge was erected over the river and the Great Western Road was diverted to made use of it.

Later Maidenhead was a stopping point for coaches and several inns were built to accommodate travellers. The present day bridge was built in 1777 costing £19,000.

The National Westminster Bank building used to be a public house called the Greyhound Inn, which was where Charles I saw his children for the final time before he was executed in 1649.
