Mablethorpe is a small seaside resort in Lincolnshire.
The town has records dating back to the 1300’s but part of the area was lost to the sea in the 1540’s.
In the 18th century money was scarce and dangerous measures were taken by many to make money and smuggling was prominent. Customs duty was very high on tobacco, silk, tea and spirits so it was a highly profitable business. If smugglers were caught the punishment was a whipping, transportation to penal colonies in Australia or even hanging.
During the 1800’s Mablethorpe was a ship-breaking centre because of iron and steam, wooden boats were not longer required. Wood ships were ‘re-cycled’. The old ships were put on the beach for the summer so they became a tourist attraction when the holidaymakers left at the end of the season the ships would be broken up. In the spring the wood was collected and sold to builders who used it for fencing and the building of barns and houses.
Nowadays it is a pleasant seaside town suitable for all from families with young children to senior citizens many of whom return time and again for further holidays in Mablethorpe.
The seafront is long, with a beach that has won awards. There are donkeys on the beach, a funfair and sand train plus little shops in which can be found gifts and mementoes.
Two bedroom apartments can be bought for around £85,000 and a two-bedroom house would cost between £85,000 and £125,000.
Recently the town held a marathon and now hope it will become an annual event.
The town is home to two supermarkets, Lidl and Co-op along with a good selection of small shops including Topsy and Tim, Rita’s Casuals, Elegant Lady and Boyz 2 Men.
There is also an indoor market in the town.
There are plenty of public houses and restaurants in town including traditional, fish and chips and Chinese.
The town is also home to a cinema and fun arcades.
