King’s Lynn is situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse.
After WWII King’s Lynn became a London Expansion Town, and the population numbers doubled as people moved from London.
The Guildhall, built in 1421, and town hall, erected in 1894 are impressive buildings and are next to the Saturday Market Place. Also in town are two lovely churches St. Margaret’s and St.Nicholas’ Chapel this is close to the newer Tuesday Market Place, which is one of the best public squares in England.
In 1987 King’s Lynn was the first town in England to install CCTV.
Some of the shops to be found in King’s Lynn include Lime Green, Ruby and Tullulah, Ikon Fashions, Gio Concept, Yanks Ltd, Boyz 2 Men and The Barn.
The town underwent a large regeneration scheme and in 2005 The Vancouver Shopping Centre, originally built in the 1960’s had a £6m multi storey car park built. A large amount of brownfield is becoming a housing development along with a business park, parkland school, shops and a new road. A 250-berth marina is planned including shops, apartments, hotel and restaurant.
King’s Lynn has always been known for its fishing and seafood industry. Today there is still an agricultural based industry including food processing.
The town annually holds two festivals, King’s Lynn Festival this is primarily one of classical music held at historical venues around town. Festival Too is one of the top three largest free music festivals in Europe held in the Tuesday Market Place.
Every Valentine’s Day a funfair sets up in town lasting around two weeks. This used to be a big affair with a lot trading taking place but as the years went on the event became more and more funfair based.
Also the Tuesday Market Square holds several Vehicle Shows where local car dealers display the cars they have for sale.
The town has several public houses and also three nightclubs Zoots, Chicago’s and Heights.
There is always property to rent in King’s Lynn with prices averaging £430pcm for a l bed flat, £550pcm for a 2 bed house and £650pcm for a 3 bed house.
King’s Lynn is home to a football club, a speedway and basketball teams.
Out and About is a charity that enables local disabled children to take part in such activities as cubs, brownies, youth clubs and sport.
