Hartlepool is a town in County Durham in the North East of England.

It was in 1838 that the ironworks were founded in the town and the shipyards following in 1870’s. By 1913 there were forty-three ship-owning companies were located in the town and were responsible for 236 ships.

Hartlepool’s football team was formed in 1908 and is called Hartlepools United.

Hartlepool was to suffer badly during the 1930’s depression with high un-employment that was to carry on until the Second World War when the shipbuilding and steelworks were rekindled. After the war these industries were to suffer a drastic decline.

Blanchland the last ship to be built in Hartlepool left the slips in 1961.

A few years later in 1968 a new retail shopping centre was opened by Princess Anne and named Middleton grange Shopping Centre this had over 130 new shops including Marks and Spencer and Woolworth. Most the shops around Lynn Street, the previous shopping area, and by 1974 even the market had taken up new quarters in the centre.

In the 1980’s the town was again hit my massive unemployment but the town pulled itself up and some ten years later invested heavily into reviving the town by modernising the retail centre, building a new marina and the historic quay was redeveloped providing more housing.

The town has been chosen to be the finishing point of the Tall Ship Race in 2010. Hartlepool will receive the ship of their way from Norway on the final leg of the race.

There are plenty of restaurants in town serving such cuisine as American, Chinese, Indian, English, Thai, Italian, Mediterranean, Spanish, and Japanese. There are also several nightclubs in town including Bar Paris, Lighthouse, Jaxx and Bar – 1. The Lloyds Bar and The King John’s Tavern are both very popular.
