Harrow is best known for its Independent Boys School, it dates back to 1572.

Throughout the years the school and number of pupils has expanded. The school was founded with sixty-nine pupils and now has eight hundred entrants aged from thirteen to eighteen years old. It produces excellent exam results and the present day fees are around £23,625 per year.

The school is currently divided into eleven houses and a twelfth is in the planning stag es and should open in September 2011.

The tradition of the school, it is said, has been held together through the years by ‘Harrow Football’ and School Songs such as ‘Queen Elizabeth sat one day’.

The school uniform is a straw hat, similar to a boater, and must be worn to all lessons apart from those taken in the late afternoon. Weekdays the boys wear white shirt, black tie, grey trousers and a blue jumper. Sunday wear is a black evening tailcoat, pinstripe trousers, black waistcoat, black tie and white shirt with a few variations for top sports team members.

Founders Day is celebrated annually and is a very important day for the school and is also attended by family and friends.

The Newboys’ Test is taken by all new entrants three weeks after joining the school. Each is trained by a ‘Shepherd’ and consists of learning the names and colours of every school house, names and initials of important masters, where the school facilities are situated and three verses of the school song ‘Forty Years On’.
