Property Information

Gloucester is the county town of Gloucestershire and is on the eastern bank of the River Severn.

Gloucester is a port linked to the Severn Estuary by the Gloucester and Sharpness canal.

The Docklands lay derelict but were renovated in the 1980’s. Some of the warehouses now house the National Waterways Museum. Others are now shops, bars and luxury apartments.

The oldest building in the town is the New Inn in Northgate Street, it’s a timbered house with large external galleries and courtyards. It was originally built in 1450 for pilgrims.

There are only a few tall buildings in the city one being the cathedral, another the tower of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and a tower that houses classrooms for the Gloucestershire College of Arts and Technology, there are also a couple of high rise blocks of flats.

Gloucester has been associated with aerospace for many, many years the Gloucestershire Aircraft Company changed their name in 1926 as international companies found the original name difficult to spell and it became the Gloster Aircraft Company.

Messier Dowty’s landing plant and Smiths Aerospace Dowty Propellers plant are located on the outskirts of the city.

Gloucester is also home to the headquarters of Cheltenham and Gloucester at Barnwood.

Shopping is very good in Gloucester and the shops on Thursday nights stay open until 7pm from May to the end of August. The city’s main shopping streets are pedestrianised and are named Northgate, Southgate, Eastgate and Westgate. There is a wide range of specialist shops as well as the usual High Street stores. In both The Mall Eastgate and Kings Walk can be found stalls and stands.

There is a covered market just off Eastgate that is exceptionally good for bargains plus stalls selling local produce such as the famous Gloucester sausage.

There is a further shopping centre in the Docks with independent shops.

A 5 storey Antiques Centre is situated in one of the old Warehouses with some 70 shops.

There are more shops selling food and clothes are lot of family run businesses in the Westgate Quarter of town.
