Gillingham is a town in part of Kent’s docklands. It is a town with considerable maritime history and was an important dock area along with Chatham until 1946. The Docks were first opened by Queen Elizabeth I in 1622.
The Docks were Gillingham’s main source of employment and when they closed in 1984 there was mass unemployment causing many social problems. The dock area is now mainly a World Heritage Site.
Brompton Barracks in Gillingham is home to a Royal Engineers Regiment museum.
Sports clubs are all around the town for football and ice-skating amongst others. The Black Lion Leisure Centre has three swimming pools, a gym, a sports hall and squash courts plus a centre for trampolining. The Strand Leisure Park has an open-air pool on the banks of the River Medway and also has tennis courts and a narrow gauge railway.
Gillingham has a large street market in the High Street on Saturdays and Mondays. There is a busy business park three miles out of town.
