Earls Court is a cosmopolitan area of London lying close to South Kensington. It was traditionally known as the second home to Australians and New Zealanders as this area had affordable bedsits. It was, until the early 1990’s rather run down and drab. It is now fast becoming up market with soaring property prices and redevelopment of the area.
Tourists often choose this part of London as their base for sightseeing as the hotels and many B+B’s in the area tend to be cheaper than the neighbouring boroughs.
There are not many shops in Earls Court but the shopping streets of Kensington are just around the corner.
Privately run pubs seem popular with residents and students alike such as The Kings Head and Ashby’s Wine Bar with O’Neills frequented mainly by students.
There are a lot of restaurants in Earls Court, something for everyone really, including Italian, French, Vietnamese, Pizza and Burger Bars, there is even an Angus Steak House.
The famous Troubador Café is still open though somewhat changed. It now has a deli and an art gallery which is available for exhibitions. It serves food from 9am – 7pm and downstairs where, in the 1960’s you may have heard Jimi Hendrix or Bob Dylan, there is still a full programme of music, comedy and poetry.
The houses around Earls Court are generally of early to mid Victorian.
