Devizes is a small town in Wiltshire.
The town has narrow streets with overhanging building and there are also several Georgian buildings.
Devizes is probably best known for the Kennet and Avon Canal constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the town with London and Bristol. The canal, close to Devizes, rises 237ft in 2.5 miles and this meant 29 locks had to be built. 16 locks are all in a straight line at Caen Hill. Although no longer used commercially this canal is still popular with those using it for pleasure purposes.
The town holds an outdoor market on Thursdays, a farmers market on the first Saturday in the month, an antiques market on Tuesdays and there is an indoor market on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Some of the shops to be found in Devizes include Tangerine, Spirit Clothing, Socks and Tops, Woolf and Bean, Detour and Cyan.
At Easter each year is the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon. The 125mile course is between London and Devizes and the first race was back in 1948. The town also has hockey and football clubs.
Property for rent in the town has prices around £525-£625pcm for a 2 bed flat, a 2 bed house around £575pcm, and a 3 bed house between £595 and £975pcm.
Devizes has plenty of public houses and the local brewery, Wadsworth, still uses horse drawn drays for local deliveries. They also open their stable yard to the public on occasions.
