Crewe came into its own in the 1830’s when it was chosen to be the site for the Grand Junction Railway locomotive works.

The Grand Junction Railway was prominent in the town and by 1843 had built two hundred houses for its workers. The company also gave an endowment for the upkeep of Christ Church and until 1847 vicars, ministers and schoolteachers received concessionary railway passes. Also provided by the railway was a health insurance scheme and doctors surgery, a cheese market and a clothing factory this made the uniforms for the railway workers.

The town’s large park, Queens Park, is on land given by London & North Western Railway, the Grand Junction Railway successors. It was said this was done to stop the Great Western Railway from laying a rail line in the area but no-one knows if this is true.

Crewe Railway Station is one of the largest in the North West of England with twelve platforms and direct services to London, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Stoke on Trent and Cardiff.

The town centre is to be redeveloped with work due to start in 2008 but further plans were submitted in 2007 and work now seems likely to begin in 2009.

The revamping of Queens Park has already started and the railway station will also be updated.
