Cleckheaton is in the Borough of Kirklees, West Yorkshire.
Cleckheaton used to be a mill town but most of the mills have now gone.
Little midget gem confectionery was originally made in a row of cottages opposite the doors of the factory. This is still the site of a factory now owned by Cadbury Schweppes.
The town’s first wealth came from the textile industry including dyeing and weaving.
The town became wealthy and this was shown in the early 1900’s when many expensive buildings were erected, public baths were built and new Grammar Schools were built and opened.
The town’s tourist trade began thriving and motorcycle and car factories opened in Cleckheaton.
The local gentry were generous and provided the money for a public library was given and also for a library in Cleckheaton’s grammar school.
Cleckheaton was in the early 1920’s to find itself in decline with pits starting to close and later the mills, foundries and factories all began to close.
It has been said that Robin Hood’s cousin was supposed to have been the prioress of Kirklees Priory. The stories about Robin Hood often have changed, so no one is really sure if he truly existed.
There are several shops in Cleckheaton and some of those that can be located in town include Bodyline, Women at 5, Jay and Em, Carousel, Gap and North View.
