Property Information

Carlisle is the county town of Cumbria and is the main shopping, commercial and industrial centre of North Cumbria. The Romans founded the settlement to serve the forts on Hadrian’s Wall.

Carlisle Castle is a medieval fortress, is 900 years old and is now home to the Border Regiment Museum. Carlisle Cathedral is actually the only Cathedral in Cumbria and has a 14th century vaulted painted ceiling and stained glass windows. The columns in the choir show scenes to do with the months of the year and the 15th century choir stalls are medieval carving treasures.

In the 19th century two new towers known as the Citadel were built at the southern entrance to the city as courts and a prison. The west wing is now open to the public.

Both the Guildhall museums and Tullis House are museums in ancient houses dating back to the 15th century. In the 19th century Carlisle became an industrial city with textile mills, engineering works and food manufacturers.

Cars of Carlisle (now part of United Biscuits) and Metal Box (now part of Crown Cork and Seal) were among the early businesses to open in Carlisle, both factories are still in operation. The loss of 700 jobs in 2005 was due to the closure of Cavanghan and Grey’s two food-producing sites.

In the early 19th century a canal was dug to connect Caldewgate with the sea at Port Carlisle. The canal was later filled in and became a railway line. Carlisle Great Fair is held annually in April. Also in April the Pirelli International Rally starts and finishes in the centre of Carlisle.

The M6 motorway is close by and goes south and M74 and A74 are both Northbound. Property to let in Carlisle costs in the region of £475-£695pcm for a 3 bed house, £395-£500pcm for a 2 bed house, £420-£450pcm for a 2 bed flat and £390pcm for a l bed flat.

Shopping in Carlisle is good and some of the shops in the city are Angels, Anorak, Warehouse, Miss Selfridge, Crème, Mailstream, Room 24 and Top Man. Carlisle has sports facilities are rugby, football, cricket speedway and horseracing.
