Canterbury is a city in Kent and is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury In the middle-ages Canterbury became a prime pilgrimage site and it was because of this that Geoffrey Chaucer was inspired to write The Canterbury Tales in 1387.

Canterbury Cathedral is a major tourist attraction with up to 1.2m visitors per year. The cathedral was built in the late 14th early 15th century by the Normans.

The city has many ancient buildings and the erection of modern buildings is regulated.

Many of the city’s shops and the bus station have been redeveloped making the shopping area much more attractive to residents and city tourists.

Some of the shops to be found in the city include Bablove, Slater Woman, Jeans and Things, Couture Designer Wear, Poppy Porter, County Clothes and USC.

Canterbury has two railway stations, Canterbury West and Canterbury East. The city is by passed by the A2 and is about forty-five minutes from the M25 motorway. It is notorious for traffic congestion and the City Council has put into place Park and Ride facilities around the outskirts of the city.

The University of Kent is about two miles out of town. Within its campus is Chaucer College an independent graduate college for Japanese students.

Canterbury has St Lawrence Ground, a cricket ground used for first class cricket. It is one of only two grounds to have a tree on the boundary, the other is in South Africa. Other sports clubs include rugby, football and hockey.
