Bridlington is a seaside resort of East Riding and is a minor port on the North Sea coast it is the largest town in East Riding.

The original town was built around Bridlington Priory about l mile inland. It was a fishing port with a small harbour that was and still is enclosed by two stone piers.

In 1879 a dyke was excavated in which were found Bronze Age arrowheads. Its known as Dane’s Dyke and is two and a half miles long and runs through the village of Flamborough, a district of Bridlington.

The first hotel opened in 1805 and soon became a popular resort for industrial workers from West Yorkshire.

The Priory was founded in 1120 and John of Bridlington had close associations with the priory. He was born in 1320 and was famed for working miracles. He died in 1379 and was made a Saint by the Pope in 1401.

Bridlington is split in two, one half being the Old Town and the other being Bridlington Quays. This area is excellent for swimming and has a long sandy beach. All the new housing has been built around this area. The promenade has ornamental gardens making it a pleasant area and has several arcades and a small funfair for the children.

There are plenty of pubs and nightclubs in the town and in Flamborough, Seabirds is a pub with open fires and a beer garden serving seafood lunches and dinners with a good selection of real ale.

Tourism is still very good here particularly in the summer months although it is now improving out of season because of the many sports and conference venues within the town.

The area has plenty of attractions to wile away the days, when not on the beach or in the sea. It has an 18 hole golf course, Cruckley Animal Farm, The Heritage Museum, Bondville Miniature Village, John Bull World of Rock, Park Rose Pottery and the Bridlington Leisure World.

There is also Bempton Cliffs RSPB nature reserve, which is a birdwatchers paradise with over 200,000 nesting birds, the largest colony in England. Nesting there each spring and summer are gannets, auks, guillernots, razorbills, kittiwakes and puffins.

Shopping in Bridlington is very good with a good range of small shops selling varied goods and a number of High Street stores including Boots, Woolworths, Comet and Tesco. There is also an outdoor market and plenty of cafes and restaurants

Some fifteen minute walk away is the Old Town which is well worth a visit as its steeped in history with a delightful range of antique and curio shops.
