Aylesbury town has a Saxon name but during an excavation in the 1990’s and Iron Age Hillfort was discovered dated from 650BC.
Aylesbury was listed as a royal manor in the Domesday Book.
There has been a market in the centre of town since the Saxon period and because it was on the main road through town, it became a trade route joining London and the south west. The town’s first jail was built in 1180 and one still remains in the town to the present day.
In 1529 Aylesbury was declared the county town of Buckinghamshire. The town played a large part in the English Civil War when it was the stronghold for the Parliamentary forces.
Aylesbury became a mill town during the 15th century supplying flour to the nearby parishes. The last mill closed in the 1970’s. Early Aylesbury was also known to have produced needles, lace and clocks.
Aylesbury Grammar School was founded in 1598.
The Kings Head is one of the few public houses in England still run as a pub but owned by the National Trust.
By the 19th century the Grand Union Canal was bringing considerable trade to the town. Hazell, Watson & Veney, Printers and Nestle dairy were the two main exployers and between them employed over half of the towns working population.
The Queens Park Centre is the largest independent art centre in the UK.
In the 1950’s and 60’s many of the towns 16th and18th century houses, although most were in good repair, were demolished so the sites could be used for commercial properties.
The Halifax Building Society is the owner of the ‘blue leannie’ office block in Aylesbury. When this was first built it was considered a motoring hazard because of the sun reflecting off the mirrored surface. A line of trees was planted in front of the building to stop the glare
The shops in Aylesbury are mainly centred in Friars Square with Woolworths, Bhs and Beatties with Marks & Spencer and Next in the High Street.
Aylesbury has a plenty of properties for rent with prices starting from £500pcm for a 1 bed flat, £825pcm for a 2 bed flat and 2 and 3 bed houses from £800-£1000pcm.
Aylesbury Station is the rail link and terminus to Marylebone. The town is located close to both the A41 and A413 making travel to and from Aylesbury easy.
