ARLA - The Association of Residential Lettings Agents was formed in 1981. It is a professional and regulatory body for letting agents in the UK. They were formed to promote standards in this sector of property marketing because requirements were very detailed and specific.

Both small and large offices make up the membership figures to 1800. Agents can only become members once they have shown to be able to conduct their business through knowledge to current best management practice. Members must have professional indemnity insurance cover and are covered by a bonding scheme providing clients with financial protection from misappropriated monies.

All members are governed by the Code of Practice that covers standards higher than the law demands. The Association runs training courses in all aspects of practice and examinations are held regularly. Members’ accounts must be audited annually to confirm the stringent policy.

The Association has its own complaints and disciplinary practice and sanctions may be imposed.

ARLA is recognised by the government, consumer interest groups, media and local authorities as the leading body in the private rented sector.

Members of ARLA are automatically able to join the National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS).

ARLA is the benchmark for professional standards that landlords and tenants can rely on.
