The name comes from the word Farnberga meaning Fernhill. It is the home of St. Michaels Abbey, a Benedictine monastry. The monks work with their hands and Benedictine monks have always done and run a busy farm, apiary, a book binding and printing business and have a publishing house. They have a shop on site and allow visitors.

The M3 motorway runs north of the town. The Farnborough Road runs north to Camberley and to the south is Aldershot.

Farnborough main railway has services running to Waterloo, Basingstoke, Southampton, Bournemouth and Salisbury. From Farnborough North station trains run to Reading, Guildford and Shelford.

The town has three main shopping centre, Kingsmead, and Queensmead (both under redevelopment) and Princesmead. It has several department stores such as Debenhams, Woolworths and Wilkinson along with many smaller and independent shops.

In and around Farnborough properties for sale and rent are always available and lettings costs are, for a l bed flat £360-£675, a 2 bed flat around £657-£750 and a 3 bed house would be between £840-£1500.

In February 2007 plans were agreed to change the image of Farnborough over the next twenty years in the hope that it will no longer be seen as a drab town. There will also be a National Air Museum taking into account the towns aviation background.

Farnborough is probably best known for the Farnborough Air Show which is held every two years on the Airfield situated on the A325 between Farnborough and Fleet. The next show will be held on the 14th – 20th July 2008. This is an 1100 acre site with 1300 buildings and houses and employs 2750 people. It is known all over the world for its Air Show.

Close to the airport is the new Farnborough Business Park, there are plans to make this area the centrepiece for Farnborough. When finished it will house a hotel, office buildings, houses an aviation library and BMW and Mini dealerships. It will also include the refurbishment of the listed wind tunnels in the area.
